Football Dictionary: German, Austrian & Swiss Terms + Slang

German-speaking football has its own language — and Austria and Switzerland add a whole layer of colourful slang on top. This dictionary explains the best of it for English speakers, plus the key standard terms so you can follow the World Cup in either language. (Meanings in our own words; sources below.)

Austrian & Viennese slang, explained

• Ballesterer — a footballer (faintly old-fashioned, ironic).
• Dribblanski — all tricks, no end product: show over substance.
• Zangler — a genuinely fine technician (the opposite of a Dribblanski).
• Bankerldrücker / Edelreservist — the eternal benchwarmer.
• Eisenfuß — a hard but fair player.
• Häusl — a disastrously bad player (Häusl = loo; strong stuff).
• Holzgeschnitzter — "carved from wood": clumsy, stiff.
• Kuh — "cow": clumsy and untalented.
• Schweinskicker — an ugly, poor (sometimes needlessly rough) player.
• Wuchtel — the ball. Our prediction-game classic, the Wuchtelwette, is named after it.
• Packeln / Bock — football boots.
• Hütte / Türl / Kiste — the goal (the frame).
• Goal / Goalie — the goal (a score) / the goalkeeper.
• Gurkerl — the nutmeg (ball through the legs): football's most elegant humiliation.
• Stanglpass — the sharp cut-back across goal.
• Outwachler — the assistant referee (the "out-waver").
• Ballschani — the ball boy.
• der Schwarze — the referee (after the traditional black kit).
• wuzeln — to play football (or table football). Our mascot Wuzi is named after it.
• a Kickerl — a casual kickabout.
• Schmäh — Viennese wit and banter.

Swiss slang, explained

• Tschütteler — the standard Swiss word for a footballer (from tschutte(n), to play football).
• Töggelischuh / Tschuttischuh / Tausendfüßler — football boots.
• Gehäuse / Kasten / Aluminium — the goal (Aluminium = after the metal of bar and posts).
• Bänkliwärmer — benchwarmer.
• Böllefresser — a player who never passes (Bölle = the ball).
• Holzfuss — a clumsy player; Skischuh — a slow, heavy one.
• Sensenmann — an unfair, hard player ("the grim reaper").
• Fahnenschwinger — the assistant referee (ironic, after the Swiss sport of flag-throwing).

What does "Wuchtel" mean in football?

In Viennese slang the Wuchtel is the ball (sometimes a powerful shot). It's where the name of our prediction-game classic, the "Wuchtelwette", comes from.

What is a "Gurkerl"?

A nutmeg: playing the ball through an opponent's legs — an especially elegant (and painful) way to beat someone.

What does "wuzeln" mean?

Viennese for playing football (also table football). Our mascot Wuzi is named after it.

What is a "Tschütteler"?
